About this product

Product Information

This is a timeless, universal story adapted from the novella by German writer Herman Hesse, about youth, the search for one's place in the world, and the struggle for happiness. Based loosely on the Indian mythological story of the prince who went on to seek enlightenment and become the Buddha, the film was made in a breathtakingly beautiful part of Northern India by director screenwriter Conrad Rooks (CHAPPAQUA) and cinematographer Sven Nykvist. Siddhartha, played by renowned Indian actor Shashi Kapoor, becomes disillusioned with the quest for spiritual enlightenment, and turns to the pursuit of material wealth. Unfortunately, he discovers that the truth remains elusive on either side of the fence, and that what ultimately makes life worth living is inner contentment and love. At once a kind of "road movie," a historical drama, and a period piece, SIDDHARTHA leaves a lasting impression on the viewer, for both its lush visual quality and the profound story that unfolds.

  • YES Found It Interesting

My sole purpose for purchasing this movie was that the novel was the inspiration for the album "Close To The Edge" by the progressive rock band YES. Ever since it's release in 1973, I could never really figure out what the suite "Close To The Edge" was about so I figured the movie would help clarify. And that it did. The story centers on the quest for heightened spiritual enlightenment by the main character Siddhartha and his travels in order to achieve his goal. Produced in 1972, the film does not really conform to standard American filmmaking standards and may require repeated viewings. However, viewed in the light of a seventies film taking place in India, it's a very enjoyable story. Recommended for Yes fans and viewers seeking a departure from standard-type films.

  • A hero whose journey ends when he finds himself.

A profound movie that I first saw at an arthouse cinema (the Valhalla in Glebe, Sydney, Australia) when I was a uni student in my early 20's. Us humans need to stop looking outwards to the world for happiness and need to focus on inner contentment and be of service to others - to ferry others over the river. I have thought about this film and its message many times in my work as teacher and psychologist over 35 years. I wanted a copy to guide me on the next stage of my journey into retirement. This movie should be more widely available around the world. The bonus extra interview with Conrad Rooks adds much to our appreciation of the film.

  • Good find

I remember seeing this movie when it came out in 1972. It had nostalgic value as I named my daughter after one of the characters. I purchased this DVD for her birthday, so she would know more about where her name came from. I was very happy to find this for a reasonable price and in good shape.

  • Siddhartha the hippie.

I believe the last time I had seen this movie was when it was in the theaters which would have been in the early 1970s. It is a movie of the 1970s more than a movie of all time. Not bad, entertaining, nostalgic.

  • Siddhartha - even better as the years pass

I have found that I like this film even better now than when it was first released, perhaps because it speaks to life experiences between then and now. The performances are authentic, the cinematography beautiful, and the music quite moving. My wife and I will continue to enjoy the film for years to come.

  • Classic!

The 1972 film transferred beautifully to DVD. Amazing scenery. Compelling story that illustrates the transitory nature of attachments and the importance of living life fully for its own sake.

  • Siddhartha DVD

After reading the novel I was anxious to view the movie. I was not disappointed. The characters were real, the settings authentic, and the movie closely followed the novel. This film will remain in my collection and viewed again and again. Excellent value.
