This wacky comedy classic directed by Stanley Kramer features one of the largest collections of American comedians ever brought together on celluloid, resulting in the kind of far-out comic gem that only the 1960s could dish out. Filled with sharp one-liners, plenty of pratfalls and double takes, and unstoppable slapstick humor, this film never stops entertaining. The laughs come mostly from vehicle accidents of all kinds: car crashes, bike accidents, airplane failures, and almost everything else imaginable. But a good amount of humor is also lent to major wrestling matches, terrible mix-ups and misunderstandings, and increasingly absurd personalities such as Mrs. Marcus (Ethel Merman), the screeching and impossible mother-in-law. The film even laughs at itself, showing its flimsy cardboard sets as characters punch out walls or accidentally explode whole boxes of dynamite. The cast includes such favorites as Jonathan Winters, Phil Silvers, Milton Berle, Buddy Hackett, Mickey Rooney, Sid Caesar, Spencer Tracey, Terry-Thomas, and Dick Shawn, among countless others.Brilliantly simple, the plot concerns a caravan of motorists who witness a terrible accident on a dangerously windy California highway. Love this old classic.
This is such a fun and funny movie. If you are an "old movie" buff you must watch. Lot's of crazy "mad-cap" adventures rolled into one. Many appearances by wonderful actors from an era when they made really fun movies. My parents took my two younger brothers and I to the "drive-in" movie to see this. I RATE THE VALUE BASED ON THE TECHNICAL QUALIY OF THE PRODUCT NOT THE STORY LINE OR THE ACTING. I FOUND THE MOVIE BORING, WHEN THE INTERMISSION CAME i TURNED IT OFF AND WENT TO BED. IT IS, IN MY OPINION, A POORLY WRITTEN SCRIPT. THE ACTORS WERE SOME OF THE VERY BEST AND FUNNIEST IN THE BUSINESS WHEN IT WAS FILMED, TRULY FUNNY MEN AND WOMEN. BUT THEIR REALLY GREAT TALENT WAS WASTED ON A POOR PLOT AND DIALOG. IT CONCERNS A RACE TO REACH A FORTUNE BURIED UNDER A 'W' LOOKING SOMETHING, ONE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THAT SOMETHING MAY BE, ONLY A GENERAL LOCATION. IT IS A CAR CHASE AND MUTUAL DISLIKE SITUATION, BUT THAT CAN ONLY KEEP ONES INTEREST SO LONG AND IT FAILED TO KEEP MINE. The BEST Action-Packed movie from the best era!
The classics and the originals are always the best. I'm a young guy myself and the new movies just never do it for me. I grew up watching TCM and its amazing how many great films they made years ago. This has got to be one of the best action movies that I can think of. This film is filled with many great old time actors and actresses from Hollywood's Golden Age of entertainment. Even if they tried to recreate this movie today, it would not be the same at all. Also a great movie to see how clean and beautiful old California use to be years ago, exactly how my family got to experience. None the less, a great movie and a great addition to add to any movie collection! GOOD PLOT WITH A SLAPSTICK MADCAP ENDING
THIS FILM BROUGHT IN ALL THE BIG NAME COMEDY PEOPLE IN HOLLYWOOD AND NOBODY WAS LEFT OUT. THERE WAS EVEN A CAMEO APPEARANCE BY THE STOOGES, HOWEVER BRIEF. ETHEL MERMAN STEALS THE SHOW WITH A LONG LIST OF ONE LINERS ALL DELIVERED JUST AT THE RIGHT TIME. THINGS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE SAME HAD SHE NOT BEEN THERE TO ORDER EVERYONE AROUND. THE ENDING IS ALMOST PREDICTABLE AS NOBDDY GETS THE MONEY AFTER TURNING THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN TO GET IT.
