Having seen the later film of the same book, Red Dragon with its all-star cast was one of my favorite films, I did not have high expectations for this film. But not only does Manhunter reach the same cinematic level as the 2000s version, it far surpasses it! The 2002 version does include iconic performance by Anthony Hopkins of Lecter, whose character was far expanded for that movie, and a few good performances by other stars, but in this movie all actors deliver, particularly Dennis Farina and William Petersen. The one that truly stands out is Tom Noonan's Francis Dollarhyde. The film itself, as a whole, is a solid piece of gold which I only regret I never saw before now. The soundtrack of this film is impeccable with the few key songs that are perfect for their scenes.

The great thing is that, compared to the other Hannibal Lecter films, it's pretty unique. The con would have to be how much the story was a bit rushed. The highlights of this movie are definitely William Petersen and Brian Cox.

Some films just do it, and this one excels in nearly all departments. Michael Mann's Manhunter is based on Thomas Harris' Red Dragon, the first Hannibal Lecktor tale and is probably the darkest of the Lecktor films. William Petersen mind-sets with Lecktor to catch him and then hunts the psychopathic killer known as the Tooth Fairy. Damaged by his experiences with Lecktor, Petersen encounters horrror piled on horror as he gets closer to the killer. At the same time Lecktor plays his own game in revenge for his capture. More notable still is the sound track/music to the film which was the principal reason for my buying the DVD special edition. An overwhelming impression of evil is established and maintained throughout the film...the softness and gentleness of some scenes shattered by some truly terrible scenes accompanied by music of exceptional menace. The end is suitable climactic... and leaves the viewer exhausted. A collector's item for sure. Essential possession for all psycho-thriller fans. 'Silence of the Lambs' and 'Hannibal' make a terrific trilogy!!!!!Read full review
