  • Sherlock Holmes! Call Dr Bell.

To explain, I am a fan or should say I am fanatical about the fictional character Sherlock Holmes, I have every book written by Conan Doyle and all but a couple of films which feature the character of Sherlock Holmes, from Basil Rathbone to Jeremy Brett to Cummerbach all have portrayed Sherlock as he is seen by people such as I, I wont mention the American version which I purchased, watched then got rid of as soon as, but apart from that all actors have played their parts in continuing the legend which is Sherlock Holmes to the full. Now, i'd never heard of the series 'Murder Rooms' until a few weeks ago, I don't tend to watch tv as I have so much more to do when i'm well, so when it appeared on my screen after entering SH in the search bar, I was intrigued, I recalled mention of Dr Bell elsewhere which was enough for me to take the plunge and buy the first series of 4 episodes, I was not mistaken in my selection. Ian Richardson plays Dr Bell as Conan Doyle recalls him, Conan Doyle is also portrayed in these episodes and Dr Bell is his mentor and former tutor. Conan Doyle stated that it was Bells way of unravelling a mystery that helped him create Sherlock Holmes and Ian Richardson plays the part of Bell so well you may well be thinking that Bell 7 Holmes are one and the same, which they of course are. Richardson's portrayal is superbly played, his analysis, his investigative techniques, his sense of Scottish humour all direct you straight to Sherlock Holmes, it cant be helped, you watch Richardson as Bell and hey presto he's Holmes. Of course you have to add the reality of the times in which Bell/Sherlock lived in and when you do you achieve a true sense of how life was, not everyone wore top hats and attended 'coming out' balls, most were living below the poverty level in a time when medicine was a 'paid for' service, so dying was a natural affair no matter what age. The 4 tales show Conan Doyle and Bell delving into murder and mystery as if it was standard and normal practice, doctors give free consultations yet charge high fees for self-made 'cure-all' medicines which don't do anything. Spiritualists, Murderesses the Irish Republicans are all bought into the picture and its Doyle and Bell who are left to unravel each case, watch out for Rik Mayall who is superb as a disgruntled, drunkard of a police office, such a shame we lost him so young as no doubt in my mind he would one day have played Sherlock himself. A stunningly gritty true to life series which produced 5 episodes only, how mad can the programme makers be for allowing this to die before it had even found its feet, if you are like me and love Sherlock Holmes you must obtain a copy of this series and you will fully understand exactly what I am badly saying. Superb performances, superb scripts, wonderful Dr Bell/Sherlock Holmes, another for my Holmes collection, just wish they had made more, much more.
