Quite possibly the best movie ever!!!! Blood, swords, and brief female nudity. What more could you want??? Buy this movie or...or.....DIE!!!!!
it was way back as a teenager in the early 80's when I first saw this film on a Phillips V2000 video recorder, a film I chose from the same rack in the pre-Blockbuster days from the local video rental shop that also housed such debatable classics as "I Spit On Your Grave" "Cannibal Ferox" and "The Last House On The Left" alongside a complete myriad of Shaw Brothers martial art chop sockey flicks and all for a mere £1.00 a night. At that time Shogun Assassin had it all, the action, the gallons of spraying blood and severed limbs, a bonkers Shogun hell bent on killing the hero and his little boy (pushed along in his little wooden cart) through fair means or foul Shogun Assassin rocked in every way however that was then... Seeing it again after all of these years perhaps a rose tinted memory of this film made me expect more however one of the first things that I noticed was that the real butchery was done in the editing suite as it just doesn't seem to flow albeit the cover insists that it is the uncut version but you can't help but feel that the whole film was sliced to please the average audience of the early 80's. Like Bruce Lee's epic "Enter The Dragon" a lot of the more deeper spiritual scenes were cut probably because the producers did not want ethnicicity to get in the way of a good action film thus concentrating on the action and the overall "wow factor" with a thin storyline which you rarely find in Japanese cinema so therefore you find that you don't really care as much as you should do for the main character which is a shame. I still like Shogun Assassin, it's a great entry level to the "Babycart" series although for recent converts to the crazy world of cult Japanese Cinema might feel a bit flat if they've seen Azumi and it's ilk beforehand but it is a 30 year old cult film and should be viewed as such! Overall?...great 80's nostalgia slice-em-up flick!Read full review
Banned since 1983, this version is at long last released in uncut form. Astonishingly violent - Shogun Assassin tells the story of Lone Wolf, a powerful and feared Ronin, a 'masterless' Samurai, who lives a peaceful existence with his wife and his son. When he refuses to swear allegiance to Kurando, the most vicious Shogun in Japanese history, Kurando orders the death of Lone Wolf's wife, Azame. Blinded by rage, Lone Wolf vows to avenge her death, taking his son Daigoro with him on the path of darkness and retribution. Soon lone Wolf's sword of vengeance is unleashed upon the evil Shogun's sons and ultimately the legendary 'Masters of Death'!
What can I write about a film that I first saw whilst on holiday in the USA back in 1982? Ist, it is more than a chop them spectacular. The Samurai in the film loses his wife because the Shogun suspects his loyalty. He then becomes a single father, making a change from the ubiquitous single mother in my country!, and then proceeds to chop off the heads etc of all who come before him with the exception of a female ninja who has the knack of getting out of danger as fast as she gets into it, unlike her compatriots! As a liker of Japanese culture, I have to think to myself, does this do the Japanese people any favours in the way how others view them? As this was made by a Japanese film company with western input, it would be wrong to judge the film by western standards. The film itself does not waste time and in comparison with other slasher type movies, it looks tame judging by what is available less than ten years later! What the message for myself is that if you make an enemy of a Samurai, do not be surprised if he gets upset and end up regreting it! At the end of the day, this could apply in any circumstance like if you hit someone, do not be surprised if they hit back!, if only harder! To finish, I bought this film because I had not seen it in 26 years and I wanted to see if it was still worth all the panic years ago!Read full review
