Additional InformationJonathan Pryce stars as Dr. William Rivers, an army psychologist who treats mentally disturbed patients so that they can return to the front, in this adaptation of Pat Barker's moving World War I novel. Dr. Rivers begins to doubt the morality of his occupation when he begins treating a bizarre trio of patients: the decorated hero and poet Siegfried Sassoon, the budding poet Wilfred Owen, and Billy Prior, a young soldier who has been struck mute by the horror he has seen. Dr. Rivers' conflict begins when Sassoon publicly refuses to fight, writing a declaration of his objections that is read aloud before Parliament, which orders him to undergo psychiatric evaluation. Deeply affected by the strength of Sassoon's convictions, Dr. Rivers begins to see the true horrors of the war and cultivates a relationship with the mute Billy, determined to cure at least one of the war's many casualties.

  • Great movie, terrible dvd.

This is an excellent movie let down by one of the worst dvd transfers I've seen. The 16x9 letterbox transfer is no such thing, it has simply been zoomed in to create the illusion of widescreen, losing a lot of the image top and bottom in the process and there's so much grain that it's almost like watching it in a snowstorm. I give the movie 5 stars and the dvd 2 stars for the having full uncut version of the film and a few bonus features.

  • The hidden casualties of World War One.

I've read the three books on which "Regeneration" is based and I watched the film when it first came out. It's hard to condense three books into a two-hour film and still keep the message; this film manages that pretty well. Jonathan Pryce is superb as the burnt-out Army psychiatrist, and the rest of the cast step up to the plate. It's largely, in my view, an anti-war film. Craiglockhart Hospital, where it mostly takes place, is in Edinburgh; it is (or was) a real place. History was made there and this history is "regenerated" in the film.

  • A good transfer of a great film.

The DVD plays perfectly, no scratches, blemishes, skipping or stalling.
