David Lynch's baroque rendering of Frank Herbert's detailed, complex, and deliberately paced epic science-fiction novel is a muddled but visually stunning affair. It's 10991, and the desert planet Dune has been taken over by the Harkonnens, oppressive conquerors who desire the precious spice that lies beneath Dune's arid sands. The story concerns the attempts of a young warrior messiah, Paul Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan), to lead the native inhabitants in an uprising against the evil empire--and battle the giant man-eating worms that guard the coveted spice.
Lynch shot much more footage than ended up in the finished film, but executive producer Dino De Laurentiis didn't want a three-hour-plus sci-fi epic on his hands, so he coerced Lynch into trimming it. The result is one of cinema's most infamous cases of personal vision colliding with studio politics. Nonetheless, Lynch still manages to cram in so many visual ideas and captures the tone of the book so well that these production issues can be easily set aside once the story starts rolling. Refusing to further edit the film for television, Lynch took his name off the director and screenwriter credits. As troubling as DUNE might have been for Lynch, the experience greatly inspired 1986's brilliant BLUE VELVET, for which audiences should be thankful.

Dune 2000
Dune, the version most people will remember, was released in 1984 and starred Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides who became the godlike saviour of the planet Dune and its people. Frank Herbert wrote the novel and David Lynch wrote the screenplay but the film was widely panned upon release for being hugely complex and unfathomable and not strictly adhering to the original plot. Having read the novel was no advantage when it was subsequently screened in the cinema. The version of Dune that is the subject of this review was an attempt to make the unfathomable fathomable and in that respect it is easier to follow than the 1984 film. Whether or not it achieves this objective is left up to the viewer. I purchased this DVD in the expectation that it would clarify the plot and for me at least it achieves that goal. The original 80s film was hugely expensive and the special effects broke new grounds but many critics believe David Lynch went too far. This was an era before CGI took off big time and which is now commonplace in just about every sci-fi film made today. I feel Dune 2000 - the mini TV series - is an improvement upon the original film and therefore I can recommend it, especially since this epic film can be purchased very cheaply.Read full review

A strange but watchable movie.
Dune follows a duke and his attempt to save the inhabitants of a planet where Spice is mined. SPICE ALLOWS THE FOLDING OF TIME & SPACE & THE EMPEROR WANTS IT AT ALL COST. A cult film.

Great film,diffrent to the origanl film though. did nt expect the comentary,and alot of the films background music which i especially like was missing,still what i payed i ll have to pick up a diffrent copy at a later date. thanks.ivan.

David Lynch's massive epic based on Frank Herbert's cult novel features some of the most spectacular sets ever built, and special effects by triple-Oscar winner Carlo Rambaldi. It is a world of menace, grandeur and intrigue. The Planet Dune - 10,000 years into the future, giant mile-long sand-worms guard its most precious and priceless asset, the spice Melange, which permits travel through Time and Space. Whoever controls the spice and its secrets controls the Universe. An epic conflict grips the galaxy as Paul Atreides leads his people into combat against the evil Harkonnens for possession of the planet. But, on Dune, Paul discovers that he has an even greater destiny to fulfill.
