Additional InformationGLORY recounts the bravery of a group of Civil War soldiers often overlooked by history--the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, a troop of free black men who fought to help win liberty for their enslaved brothers. Based on the historical novels ONE GALLANT RUSH by Peter Burchand and LAY THIS LAUREL by Lincoln Kirstein and the letters of Robert Gould Shaw, the film follows the youthful Colonel Shaw (Matthew Broderick) as he takes responsibility for readying these soldiers for battle. Shaw, a privileged young Boston Brahman, finds the job harder than expected because many of the men balk at taking orders from him. Private Trip (Denzel Washington) is especially resistant to Shaw's leadership, but over time the two come to an understanding as they endure the hardships of the war. On July 18, 1863, Shaw volunteers the 54th for the honor of leading the charge against Ft. Wagner, a mission that means almost certain death, with Trip carrying the regiment's colors into battle. This gritty and realistic vision of the horrors of war is a moving and critical examination of a lost piece of history. Beautifully shot and triumphantly acted (by a cast that also includes Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, and Andre Braugher), director Edward Zwick's film serves as a tribute to the courage and selfless bravery of the black soldiers of the Civil War.

  • A little-known History

"Glory" is about the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts in the American Civil War almost exclusively comprised of black soldiers: freed slaves who had to fight and die for their freedom. There are some historical inaccuracies in the storytelling ( inevitably!) however they don't really detract from a good plot and a fine cast of actors including Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman bring sparkle to the whole.

  • The view of Afro-americans has not changed much in some American States.

This film is an eye opener when you look at the treatment of men freed from slavery. They wanted to fight on Union side against the Southern States in the American Civil War. This film shows how they were treated until a young officer from a high class Union military family, asked to for the command of these soldiers. Everyone turned against, his family and the Unionist High command. He stood firm and got them proper uniforms, arms and provisions same as others in the same army. This film shows how one stood up against the establishment for his men. They then responded by becoming a highly efficient troop of soldiers. Showed they were worthy of fighting with there white counterparts.

  • Exceptionally well-rendered and emotive American Civil war drama

The film is based on a true story and has some top class actors in it. It was nominated for five Academy Awards and won three, including one for Denzel Washington for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Private Silas Tripp.
