Having won both domestic cups, against Birmingham and Arsenal, they went on to complete the treble by winning the UEFA cup in a nine-goal thriller against Spanish club Alaves, with the winning goal coming from veteran midfielder Gary McAllister. In the Premiership they also secured the third Champions League spot, together with Premiership champions Manchester United and Arsenal.
