Great classic film about two male friends at University who fall deeply in love. A balanced and realistic portrayal of both homosexuality and class in pre first world war England. The characters are written and acted with insight and sympathy but are by no means purely heroic or idealised. Sad and touching but in the end optimistic, this film is a beautiful to watch but nevertheless has a fast paced and supriseing storyline.
I saw Maurice on television a while back and thought it was well acted and filmed, also it was such a refreshing change to see a gay love story filmed with such high budget and caliber of cast, and not the usual depressing ending with the main character being killed off or committing suicide.I really wanted to see this film again and add it to my collection.I would recommend the film to anyone who is a fan of the other Merchant Ivory films, but also anyone who enjoys a angst filled love story. There are a few changes from the book (as always) if you have read it? but the film on it own stands of one of my personal favorites.
went to see this film in the 8o's when i was struggleing with my own sexuality it was beautiful.gave me something to strive for.
