Additional InformationIn PLATOON, Oliver Stone uses his experience as an infantryman in Vietnam to convey the immediacy of guerrilla warfare: the brutal heat of the jungle, the brushes with such wildlife as snakes and leeches, and, most powerfully, the presence of the unseen enemy. Charlie Sheen stars as Chris, a raw recruit, or "new meat," who serves as the film's narrator. At first he wilts under the rigorous conditions of jungle life, freezes up in a firefight, and wonders whether he'll be able to survive. But he gradually adapts and, as time goes by, begins to see that the platoon is divided into two groups. One consists of lifers, juicers, and subintelligent whites, the other of blacks and heads. Sgt. Barnes, a combat-loving burnout (Tom Berenger), is the informal leader of the lifers, and Sgt. Elias, a free spirit (Willem Dafoe), leads the latter group. When the platoon takes some gruesome losses while on an o.p., an enraged Barnes kills some Vietnamese who may or may not have been VC and orders the burning of their village, outraging the temporarily absent Elias. As the conflict between these two reaches its tragic denouncement, Chris must decide what he really values. Widely regarded as one of the finest war films ever made, PLATOON reflects not only the nation's division over Vietnam but it intimately conveys timeless verities of battle: terror, disorientation, exhilaration, and horrible loss.
ReviewsVariety - ...Intense....Very effective scenes....An impressive-looking production in all respects..., Premiere - "...Wrenching..." - Recommended, Entertainment Weekly - Rating: B+, New York Times - Nothing that Oliver Stone has done before...is preparation for the singular achievement of his latest film, PLATOON....A major piece of work, as full of pasion as it is of redeeming, scary irony...

pity (johnny d) didn't have a more prominent role

the storyline is rather brutal, although the characters are quite engaging. However, the fact that (Johnny Depp) is hardly noticeable in the film, and has to be looked for, is a little annoying to a (johnny d) fan, can't help wondering if whoever was in charge of the casting for this film, hasn't waisted an opportunity, to cast (johnny d) in a more prominent noticeable to the everyday type viewer, role, which would have greatly enhanced the appeal of the film, Any of the prominent roles would have suited (johnny d), and with (him) in the limelight more, the brutality this film entails, might have been less noticeable. Only really interesting, without much appearance from (johnny d), if this particular ((war)) is of interest to the viewer, to (myself), personally it isn't, thanks for requesting the review, (nafc31)

  • The worst of laughable Hollywood Vietnam films!

100% hilariously unbelievable. From Charlie Sheen's puking, with no vomit; ..to his smoking pot, without exhaling smoke! ..From the melodramatic death of Willem Dafoe; ..to the ridiculous timing of the jet strike that saves Sheen's ass! ..A joke from start to finish! ..Oh! And I'm sure if you wanted to survive the war, you'd go around the jungle with white bottles on your helmet; and your white arms uncovered! Wouldn't you? ..But maybe that's why the Americans lost it? ..Coz they all seem to do it in their Vietnam movies!
