Jennifer Lopez is cast in this movie and has the role of a tough cop in this romantic thriller. I confess to enjoying the last film she was in- 'The Wedding Planner' (see my review). By contrast, and almost as if to prove that she really can act, her role here is a very different one indeed. Aside from the slightly weird motivation in this one, it's another clean as a whistle drama and I’m pleased to say that Jennifer's acting ability shines through first rate here as well. Very few first rate music artists, (and dancers), can equal capabilities as she can with acting as well! We see her tough, street fierce as well as glamorous here and it all adds up to a very refreshing piece of cinema. The weird elements of the film centre on an almost deadbeat character with a mysterious unknown element about him, as he goes around helping others to eventually help himself into an almost fated romance with Jennifer! The mysterious element seems to be the thing that keeps the thriller aspect of the movie story alive, generating an intriguing factor that maintains interest as the story unfolds. In many ways things that turn out in the emotional senses here seem pretty typical of the genuine way things can and do happen in real life. It's that 'realistic' and 'food for thought' style that is stimulated by the motivation of the story, almost being unthinkable, causing us to almost feel the factors that we may be taking for granted in our own lives, as we each individually interact with others that are around us. The moral of the story turns out to be the message that things don't have to be perfect and people don't have to be either. I must admit to rather liking the philosophical sense that this movie provokes. It is just that an edge of some kind is missing. Perhaps it's a musical theme of some kind. Although a pretty powerful musical section does exist in the film it is self generated by the central character and as such is not something that we can recognise. A difficult cocktail of romance, thrilling capability and philosophical sense seem spoilt by the 'weird' nature that seems to distract from the strength that the movie should create emotionally. Jennifer made the movie for me with her style and acting and although all a bit American, I found it all extremely enjoyable.Read full review
