Sick, twisted, perverse, shocking are usually attributed to the films of Takashi Miike. 'Ichi The Killer' certainly shows that Takashi hasn't tired of this either, and after watching this his fans won't have either. A stylisticly visceral film is intended to shock its audience with plenty of gore, violence and strong scenes of torture. Based on the Manga cartoon of the same name, you find it difficult who to root for here as each character has honourable yet dispicable traits. Either way, its a bloody good thrill ride which always keeps your head spinning and quite possible your stomach churning. First class, yet again from the modern day King Of Extreme Cinema.
Something that has to be seen, if only to satisfy curiosity. Im a Tartan Asia Extreme fan so this type of film was always going to go down well. If youre not into Japanese gangs, violence and spraying blood possibly avoid BUT what makes this film so enjoyable is its portrayal of the two extremes Masochism and Sadism - both brought out so differently when many would usually put them both in the same box. Not easy to follow and demands attention (which is good if you ask me) but if you do it is rewarding. It may even change your whole outlook on what cinema can and should provide. If you watch it, and you like it, I would recommend watching the anime 'prequel' short (approx 30 mins) which unravels how ichi became what he is in the first place. Theres a few continuation errors but its just as 'hardcore' if not more so (albeit animated). Cant give it excellent because its probably memorable for its outrageousness rather than its artistry. But I am an anus when it comes to East asian cinema!Read full review
Beforehand I heard alot of good reviews about this film from friends and how gory and disgustingly horrifying it was. Apparently when this film came out in Hong Kong, the staffs at the cinemas gave out sick bags =P so be prepared for a stomach churning movie! If you're a big gory killing fan, then trust me, this is the one film you cant miss! After watchin the film, I found that the story was unpredictable and definitely unique. I loved the gory parts. Even though it wasnt extreme, I liked the fact they actually showed it. What I didnt like about it was some of the gory parts didnt look realistic enough, which i found disappointing. Maybe its just me though =P The extra special dvd was definitely a plus - great to see how they put everything together *big thumbs up*
In fact i bought this movie for the fact that Tadanobu Asano is my favourite actor ever. However, this movie is not for people with weak stomachs, definitely!!!Scenes of sado-masochism are very explicitly present throughout the movie.Still,i must say,it is a real good one!
This is a good film. Very graphic, brutal, and different. Really captures the origional manga I think. Deffinately not for those with a weak stomach though :P
