Has a distinct feel of the time it was released - the angst of Joy Division lives on in this album

The first album under the New Order name was released in 1981 and the newly named band were trying to recover from the death of Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis at the time. If you like most New Order albums but are not a fan of Joy Division, then you will be disappointed as Movement is more like a Joy Division album. If, however, like me you are a fan of both, then this is up there with Joy divisions best work. Vocal duties are shared between Peter Hook (Dreams Never End, Doubts Even Here) and the now familiar sound of Bernard Sumner. Other tracks feature Peter Hooks famous bass riffs (Chosen Time), atmospheric keyboards (Doubts Even Here) and scattered eclectic drumbeats (Denial). In the end, this album represents the metamorphosis of Joy Division into New Order, and you can even hear this in the excellent track The Him. However the sound New Order eventually developed is not only a world away from this, it's in a different solar system! Is that a good thing or a bad thing? - buy this and decide for yourselves.Read full review
Martin Hannett, made famous for producing Joy Division, went on to produce this, the first album by New Order. Whilst being intense and brooding, 'Movement' shows the first signs of New Order's move towards synth-heavy dance music, for which they were to become leading exponents. There is still the economic use of Sumner's guitar and powerful, driving basslines, but the introduction of programmed drum beats and synthesisers gives a flavour of what was to come. Peter Hook rated this as one of his favourite New Order albums and I have to agree; it really is groundbreaking.
