Neil Young never releases a really bad album. But this one is amongst his weakest. Together with some of his previous albums in the eighties it clearly shows that he can perform music of various styles in a descent way, and this is his experiment with the blues genre. He performs OK and in his own original way, but there are a lot of blues artists that succeed better than Young. The album is absolutely woth listening to, but it definitely is a parenthesis in his carriere. If you want to invest in a dozen of Neil Young's best albums, This Note's For You should not be on the list. Neil Young is best when he is Neil Young, and not when he tries to be someone else. TR
I am a Neil Young fan from way back in the early ‘70’s, and love most of his albums. This album is wonderful; stand out tracks are “This note’s for you” which deals with artists who accepted sponsorship from multinational corporations, thereby selling out their artistic integrity for money. Great video of this on YouTube. “Twilight” and “Coupe De Ville” are classic Neil: brooding, moody and introspective. Beautiful album. 10/10
