What a movie! Let's start with the title; it "Rules" in the DVD world, and has plenty of "Class" too! It's an early 70's flick and it can be considered the son of the 60's. It's very British, stylish and irreverent as only the Brits can be when at their best. Peter O'Toole literally explodes on screen dominating every single frame; witty, humorous, daring, flamboyant, tragic, proving that he is indeed one of "the finest men/actors that ever breathed" as he stated in What's up Pussycat. The punchlines are so many and so subtle it reminds me, in that respect, of a Marx Brothers movie; have to watch it several times in order to get 'em all! If movies came with an IQ this one would certify around 180 for sure, the drawback being that it's NOT for everyone; one has to be "in tune" in order to appreciate its subleties and pun. The storyline, at first, seems to be ridiculous and exagerated, until one realizes that it actually mirrors certain aspects of society and human nature that are scarely very real: "cure" someone perfectly acceptable and nice only because he doesn't fit in with the rest of society and thinks "outside the box" (still sounds familiar, huh ?)and see what you can turn him into! It's worth looking for the uncut version 'cause it's one of those movies where nothing is waisted and you have to watch every second of it. My advice? Do what I've done; devote an afternoon for yerself, pour yerself a drink or two, have a snak nearby (a sandwhich or a slice of cake will do very nice, if not you can resort to a good muffin), put yer feet up, take a deep breath and loose yerself in this supremely intelligent, funny, irreverent, zany, deep, creative, humorous, artistic, satirycal, enveloping piece of genious.Read full review
Wicked satire on the British class system and social institutions, with Peter O'Toole as a barmy earl who can't decide if he is God or Jack the Ripper. Wonderful support from a galaxy of character actors, including Alastair Sim, Arthur ("Dad's Army") Lowe and Coral Browne. Sadly it is also dated, overwrought and overlong.
