When Sir Ector dies tragically in a tournament his squires; William, Roland and Wat find themselves out of work and penniless. So they put their heads together and devise a cunning plan - they will carry on without him! But there is just one little problem, only people of noble birth are permitted to compete on the tournament circuit and they are all commoners. [Enter Geoffrey Chaucher Stage Left] Chaucher, portrayed as a hopeless gambler / bit of a hack / itinerant writer, forges a set of papers for William [Heath Ledger, who I had never heard of] who uses them to assume the identity of Sir Ulrich von Lichtenstein of Gelderland with Wat [Alan Tudyk who played 'Wash' in Firefly/Serentiy] and Roland [Mark Addy, A UK TV regular] acting as his squires. Geoffrey decides to tag along for the ride and announces 'Sir Ulrich' with some incredibly flamboyant speeches. As you would expect there is a larger than life baddy who rumbles their little game and the film ends with a big showdown with the expected result. And that's pretty much all there is to it... If you view this as a historical drama this film is an unmitigated disaster with historical inaccuracies lurking round every corner. I cringed at quite a few but if you are a member of a heraldry club or reenactment society you will have torn most of your hair out before getting five minutes into the film. But... This was NOT turned out by the BBC historical drama department. This is NOT meant to be a historical drama. It IS, however, meant to be a bit of fun, a spot of light entertainment and as such it is an incredible success. The interplay between Tudyk and Addy leads to endless comic moments but this is not really a comedy. In fact it is rather difficult to categorise this film, the closest I can think of is 'College athlete from humble beginnings makes good, saves the day and gets the girl' - except it's set in the 14th Century - but to say that would do it an injustice as those films are usually crap and this film most certainly isn't crap! Ok so there are some duff bits but I think they are so few and far between we can safely ignore them. The brilliant scenery, the incredible rock 'n' roll soundtrack, the deliberate superimposing of 20th century character traits [and 15th century attire] onto a 14th century setting for comic effect and some brilliantly inspired acting all combine to produce a thoroughly enjoyable film. Sit down and suspend your disbelief for a couple of hours and I am sure you will agree. Regards tbod Update: 23/01/2008 Tragically Heath Ledger was found dead yesterday. I'm sure you'll agree 28 years is too short a time for any man to live.Read full review
