Additional InformationThis swinging spoof of Ian Fleming's spy hero concerns an aging James Bond (David Niven), reluctantly dragged out of retirement to face down the evil crime clique called SMERSH. In order to confound the enemy, the Secret Service sends five other agents, also under the name "Bond," and all six converge on the titular casino. Woody Allen, as the retiring superspy's nephew, causes havoc, while a flood of famous faces (and directors) revel in the silliness. And there's a great Burt Bacharach score to boot.

  • Never Fear Bond is Here

Episodic series of sketches - the film is based on the title, not Fleming's novel. It's not really possible to view this as a film with any kind of plot. There seems to be huge gaps in the narrative, and sequences do not properly join up. So, forget expecting it to make sense. This is a ride through what people think they remember of the swinging sixties, packed with psychedelia, beautiful women, crazy gadgets, knockabout fights, chases and explosions - all to the a lively score by Burt Bacharach, performed by Herb Alpert. So many stars pop up, some playing surprising roles - Deborah Kerr is one of the funniest turns in the movie. Conversely, Peter Sellers, normally brilliant, is mostly boring here ( he wanted to play it straight. Oh, well). For a film that originally carried a 'U' certificate in England (it's been recertified as a PG) it's full of racy scenes and references. On the whole it's a disjointed but (I think) enjoyable romp. It must be said, however, that the picture quality on this edition is way below par. The colours are muddy and the image, though 'widescreen' is very small on the screen, with acres of black border around the picture. No adjustment of the screen preference settings can improve this. One of the trailers in the extras gives some indication of what it should look like. It doesn't render it unwatchable, although it did turn my 43" screen into a 32" screen.

  • It's messy mish mash and a waste of the talents of its actors and directors. The fact that there are so many directors speaks for itself

It's the proverbial turd which can''t be polished. What an incredible waste of money and resources. The long list of directors speaks for itself. There is clearly something wrong with the script and the producers who supervised it.

  • Appaling!

The picture appears as a small ‘letter box’ in the middle of your television screen rather than full size and filling your television screen, which as absolutely appalling, really badly transferred to DVD and almost unwatchable!

  • Casino Royale. A mickey-take on every spy hero and villan.

My son absolutely loves James Bond, and had heard about this from his granddad. They both watched it together and enjoyed it enormously. It was very light-hearted and entertaining.
