As a big fan of deductive reasoning and the famous Private Consulting Detective, Mr. Sherlock Holmes; this film is a must. The late great, Ian Richardson makes a superb Holmes; isn't it funny that all the great Sherlock's, Rathbone, Cushing, Norwood, Brett, have all sadly passed away, before their time. But look at what they have left us, they have left us some outstanding films, that brings the great Detective to life. This version of the sign of Four, from the book of the same name, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, made in 1983, Directed by Desmond Davis, sees Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson (David Healy) employed by the beautiful, but innocent, Miss Mary Morstan, the Daughter of Captain Morstan, who faught in Indian, and disapeared while visiting his old Boss, Major John Sholto. Not giving to much of the story away, Sholto, Morstan, and Jonathan Small, along with an Indian Soldier, steal some treasure, at the time of the Indian Rebellion of 1857; one of the jewells is the second biggest diamond in the world, called the 'Great Mogal.' Sholto, and Morstan being Officers bring the Treasur home to England, while Small, an NCO, and the Indian Solder are sent to the Anderman Islands as punishment for stealing the treasure. The regime on the island kills the Indian soldier, and leaves Small with one leg. Small escapes from the island, with the help of Tonga, a native of the island, to seek revenge on Sholto and Morstan.....and the story starts from there.Read full review
THIS SHERLOCK HOLMES ADVENTURE IS WELL WORTH A LOOK,IN FACT ITS AN EXCELLENT FILM,SO GO GET IT...........
despite ian richardson bieng a favourite actor, the role of sherlock holmes does not really suit him. the acting is good but it does not excite or move me in any way. other actors playing holmes are often disappointing also. i feel that holmes is better on audio than film or better still in print. i have seen good performances but they are rare.
Entertaining, tongue-in-cheek Sherlock Holmes adventure with Ian Richardson as the Consulting Detective. A cache of plundered jewels is at the heart of the mystery, which also stars a young and delightful Cheri Lunghi. Good fun.
