A bleak rebuke to the Rousseauvian notion of the noble savage, director Peter Brook's faithful adaptation of William Golding's 1954 novel stars James Aubrey and Tom Chapin as antagonists Ralph and Jack, respectively. When a plane carrying thirty-odd British schoolboys out of a war zone crashes on an island, all of the adults are killed. The boys organize for survival, naming Ralph as their chief, in charge of providing fire and shelter. Jack is designated to lead a group of boys to hunt the wild pigs that roam the island. Almost inevitably, as time passes, the two boys, representatives of civiliation and savagery, begin a deadly struggle for dominance. The frequently invoked image of life as a war of all against all, in which civility is merely another weapon in the battle to gain one's ends, is here given a particularly disturbing twist in being enacted by children. Brooks shot an enormous amount of footage, a documentary-style ratio of 60-1, and used non-professional actors to achieve a raw, visceral realism. The film, which features a jauntily ironic score by Raymond Leppard, succeeds completely in suggesting the chilling malignity that may lurk beneath the blandest exterior.Product Identifiers

Children out of control
This a very frightening film. To think that the older kids have not learnt anything about social life and slowly they themselves become savages is mind blowing This is a film to watch because one can only hope that society has changed. Looking at a documentary of kids in a classroom nowadays seems just the same, again way out of control. They rule and the teachers obey. I am 64 years and in my day we would not dare. I do not condone the cane but under strict control, I think that it should be available. Cameras prove the problems in school. Some of the kids in the film were very young and indeed very vulnerable. going into the underbelly of class vs class
an amazing piece in cinematic history, the film has an amazing mindset filmed in black and white, i dare say it wouldn't have had the same atmospheric richness if set in colour, a crowd of school children diving deep into the somewhat cruel underbelly of children been left to their own devices after a plane crash on the island, class vs class and how one class has this godlike complex they are better than the other trying to form a hang man and jury against another class, kind of dog eat dog scenarioVerified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned
