Additional InformationThe year is 1965, and Glenn Holland (Richard Dreyfuss), a composer convinced he is destined to write an historic opus, takes a job as a music teacher to pay the bills. Unbeknownst to him, it is the next 30 years, spent as an instructor, that will define his life. His passionate teaching motivates and even changes a number of his students. However, Holland suffers a tragedy in his personal life-his young son Cole is deaf, and thus unable to fully appreciate the joys of music. As a result, Holland concentrates more on his students than on his own child. But when Holland finally realizes the extent of his neglect, the teacher must learn to accept his son's handicap and give him the love and guidance he deserves.

Enjoyable family film

This is one of the best films I've ever seen
I first saw this film a number of years ago on VCR. I'm not a fan of music films, musicals etc at all, and at first this film was just on in the background. However, I picked up on what was going on and started to watch it. When it finished I rewound it and watched it again straight away. I have now seen this film about 20 times - quite probably more - until my tape copy got eaten by my machine. I immediately started looking for a replacement copy on DVD and was incredibly happy to be able to find a copy on DVD so quickly. Dreyfuss really got everything together for this role; he really makes you believe in his character and you will really feel for him. I personally think it's his finest film, which is saying something when you think of the great work this actor has done. The film takes place over a number of years starting with the main character, Mr Holland, taking a temporary job at a high school as it's music teacher. That's all I'm going to say, except that you'll have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by this film. The start is a bit slow but this is just setting up the story - my wife was going to walk out on it during the first 15 minutes or so but I persuaded her to carry on with it. She now loves this film as well and has seen it 3 times in the last two weeks! This film isn't a musical even though there is some music in it. It's just a really good story of an ordinary man, his family, his dream and how his job and passion for the music affects everyone who knows him. Every time I watch this film I come away feeling good. It'll make you laugh, it'll make you cry, you will feel for the characters as if they're your own family and friends. It is simply a fantastic film. Give it a go and you'll see what I mean.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
