    Epic, fascinating but overwhelmingly tragic. It is essential viewing.

    This 26 episode documentary remains the definitive TV history of the Second World War. A warning though: I first saw this at 9 years of age: that was too young. It is too harrowing for children, particularly the Holocaust episode, but many other scenes. So, for teenagers and above only. The narration is sober, Olivier is undramatic. Carl Davis's music is poignant. But what matters most of all are the hundreds of interviewees recounting their small parts in such a massive tragedy. This Box Set includes a lot of bonus material narrated by Eric Porter. You will find that some of the weight of the war sticks with you for life. But you cannot understand WWII without watching this: all of it.

    Arguably the best documentary series of all time

    The best WW2 documentary and arguably the best documentary series of all time on any subject. Made when TV channels knew how to make informative and intelligent programmes, instead of the dumbed-down content today which all seems to be about the 'celebrity experience'. If this documentary were made now it would probably feature episodes such as "Gryff Rhys Jones discovers Iwo Jima" or "Stacey Dooley investigates the siege of Stalingrad', or similar nonsense.

    I This documentary series first shown in 1974 has been shown all over the world each day since then. It's importance as an unbiased account of WWII cannot be underestimated and is something every should be made to watch lest we forget. In 26 episodes..each episode lasting about an hour covers specific topics and shows how it really was. If you don't own this you should.
