The best film on music I have seen - by a country mile! A brilliant picture of Mozart as history says he really was, yet which also paints a picture of the petty jealousies which ultimately destroyed the great musical genius. Minor historical inaccuracies are acceptable is pursuit of the overall excellence of the drama. The film treats its viewers as intelligent people, and the overall ambience results in a magnificent, if harrowing, portrayal of the final years of Mozart;s short life.

When I first saw this movie I was hooked - thus started my collection of classical music. When I heard of the 'Director's Cut' I was even more intrigued. Fortunately it was aired on television so it was like a try before you buy sort of thing. Having watched the movie, it made more sense (ie. Constanzi's dislike of Salieri). Anyway, I finally have it now in my DVD collection of special editions and the movie was well worthy of the academy awards it received.

One of the most entertaining films I have ever seen. However, it’s a shame it’s seen as a documentary on the life of Mozart when nearly all the threads in the story are pure fiction and misrepresentations. I can assure you that Mozart did not end his concerts by turning his back to the audience, then bending over, lifting up his suit tails and breaking wind while laughing like a hyena!
