About this product

Product Information

A made-for-TV mini-series based on the classic Stephen King horror novel, STEPHEN KING'S THE SHINING is a tense psychodrama about a man named Jack (Steven Weber) whom accepts a caretaker job at a winter resort, relocates his wife (Rebecca De Mornay) and child there, and subsequently goes completely insane. Jack, already in a slumbering state of depression, seems to be taken over by supernatural beings within the resort, leading him to threaten the lives of his family. More of a literal adaptation than the 1980 Stanley Kubrick film.

    The Shining

This is for my money, the superior version of the story. Jack Torrance's descent into alcoholic insanity is handled far better than in the original film. The supporting cast are all veteran actors and Steven Weber, Rebecca DeMornay and Courtland Mead make a convincing family. The horror and tension are worked into the plot subtly and realistically. Although I loved Scatman Crothers portrayal of Dick Halloran, Melvyn Van Peebles brings greater depth to a suberb character. Elliot Gould is also worthy of praise as the odious, self important hotel manager and the scenes between Gould and Weber are a joy. As well as King's Hitchcockian cameo there is a brief scene with Shawnee Smith who was in The Stand. The film is quite long but this shouldn't put you off as it is a thoroughly absorbing tale with interesting characters and is far more faithful to the Kubrick film which by comparison seems rushed.

  • Most critical review

Meaningless mish-mash of loose ends and crap acting.

Once again, Stephen King proves that he can't write a screenplay to save his life. He may be the master of horror fiction but as soon as he gets anywhere near a script it turns into a train wreck. Terrible acting, clunky direction, meaningless plot and as scary as a playful kitten, this film is honestly not worth the energy used to press the 'on' button on your DVD remote. I don't know where to begin - probably the worst film I've ever seen. Avoid. Trust me on this.

  • Great mini series.

Although you cannot fault the original Shining film by Stanley Kubrick this mini series in my opinion is also great too in a slightly different way to the film. It is still spooky and very well made and also keeps you on the edge of your seat. I would certainly recommend it.

  • More subtle than Jack

While the Jack Nicholson film is highly praised, it is not entirely true to Stephen King's story. That is way more scary and subtle, as this film is King's own script of it, and to my mind way better. It was shown on TV many years ago, and stayed with me far longer than the cinema film did.
