Additional InformationImaginative theology and a bigger-than-usual budget make Kevin Smith's (CHASING AMY, CLERKS) fourth film a kind of post-Catholic fantasy that only a comic-book enthusiast of his caliber could dream up. It concerns banished angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) who, after a few millennia in Wisconsin, discover a loophole in Catholic doctrine that would allow them back into heaven--but prove the fallibility of God and destroy the universe. As they make their way to New Jersey to receive a plenary indulgence, God dispatches a seraphim (Alan Rickman) to recruit lapsed-Catholic Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) to stop the angels. She finds help in muses, prophets (Jay and Silent Bob, played by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith respectively), and the forgotten 13th apostle, Rufus (Chris Rock). Before long, all hell breaks loose--literally--and God (Alanis Morrisette) has to put in an appearance of her own. Smith's controversial (and very funny) film is powered by his trademark dialogue, ripe with observations on pop culture, religion, and bodily functions.
ReviewsPremiere - "...Funny, original....A high-wire act..." -- 3 out of 5 stars, USA Today - ...There is a keen intellect behind this devoutly defiant fable....Stuffed with cheery irreverence and inspired in equal parts by comic books, sports bar culture and the Bible..., Box Office - ...There are kernels of genius here..., New York Times - ...Mercilessly funny....[The actors] bring great, understandable enthusiasm to Mr. Smith's smart talk and wild imaginings..., Variety - ...A fiercely ambitious script that never loses its raucous rhythm....Affleck gives his strongest performance to date...

  • Brilliant, comic and irreverent film

Dogma’s a genuinely brilliant piece of work, from the opening disclaimers to the closing sequence. Funny, sarcastic and even disgustingly funny (in a good way) it manages to poke fun at a subject ripe for it. That said, to me the main subject of ridicule is mankind and not faith. It is often seen as being an attack on Catholicism, but repeatedly it is suggested that it is not faith at fault but mankind’s application and twisting of it. Seems a parable today more than ever.

  • Hollywood stars having a lot of fun

A film that subsequent directors and writers have obviously plundered for themes and characters. It definitely is of a time where being overly sensitive was not an issue and is first rate satire. A hoot and a half.

  • Wonderfully irreverent and very funny

One of my favourite films - it's bound to offend plenty of people so don't watch if you take church seriously. Think "Life of Brian" for the new millenium and you're on the right track. Brilliant.
