I just had to write a review of this, one of my favourite films, and one that gave me my ID, in fact was the very reason I found eBay. I had remembered this film ever since seeing it as a child, and it was special to me even then as it was one of the first books I ever read, then titled 'The Ghosts' by Antonia Barber. The plot is actually quite complicated for what is a childrens film, but it is shot beautifully, and is often mistaken for the Railway Children, having had the same director and producer. The story revolves around two children sent with their mother to look after a derelict old manor house in the country. Their benefactor who found them this much needed job is an old and mysterious solicitor, Mr Blunden. While at the house they are warned about possibly seeing ghosts, and eventually meet two younger children that are the cause. They are not exactly ghosts, but rather former residents of the manor house who have travelled in time, seeking help to prevent their deaths in a fire set by their evil stepmother. Mr Blunden it turns out is actually three different people, but I'll let the film explain that bit. If it all sounds complex, it really isn't when watching, and as it's set in the early nineteen hundreds and eighteen hundreds, it's a costume drama that hasn't aged at all since it was made. It has some recognizable stars, including a young Rosalinde Landor, Lawrence Naismith, Lynn Fredrick, and the wonderful Diana Dors, who is simply the best as the evil Mrs Wickens. For me, it is one of those rare films that is both nostalgic and happy. It has some very good special effects, especially the fire scenes, and you care about the characters. Younger children might need someone to sit with them through it, but anyone who likes a script that keeps your attention, some good acting, and a nice warm feeling at the end, will enjoy this immensely.Read full review
I bought this dvd after having seen it many years ago and never forgot it.Its one of those childhood films that never leaves you.It has something for everyone, keeps you rooted to the spot as you wonder whats going to happen next.Set in Victorian England it basically tells the story of a poor woman and her tree children that are poverty stricken .One snowy night they are visited by a strange elderly man who offers the woman and her children an opportunity to move into an old run down mansion to act as housekeeper. It turns out that the house is haunted by past events and ghosts of prior occupants of the mansion. There was a fire one hundred years earlier, and the two young children are visited by two ghosts of children who died in the fire with the hope of turning back time to change the past, and prevent the fire which destroyed lives. There are many twists and turns to the story which will keep you enthralled.Diana Dors is wonderful as the wicked Mrs Wickens,Lynne Frederick is great as young Lucy. All comes good in the end,and the film leaves you with a really good feel factor.A great family film for kids and adults alike.I would recommend to everyone. An unforgettable childrens movie that will never date and give pleasure to children for years to come.Read full review
This is an absolutely superb children's film- ages 8-12 (female). It revolves around a destitute family who are visited by a very strange old man. He persuades them to take up residence in an old haunted house and in doing so, they change the course of history. It keeps children gripped right until the end. This film was released around the same time as The Railway Children, and is of the same genre, yet so much better. I watched this film on VHS as a child and I am thrilled that a superb quality DVD copy is still available on ebay. I would thoroughly recommend this!
