The wonderful Everly Brothers do their best with material that ranges from mediocre to weak, the backing musicians (which include my favourite guitar player, the late, great Clarence White) do not get a chance to show what they can do and the Everly Brothers' superlative harmonies are rarely tested. This is a compilation of two albums, Stories We Could Tell and Pass The Chicken & Listen, it is described as a 'Country Rock' album but is not in the same league as other country rock albums of the early '70s by the likes of Eagles, Poco etc. Value For Money? Well. I only paid a couple of quid for the album from Magpie Music so I can't complain about the price, I would have been very disappointed if I'd paid full price. It sounds to me very much like a compilation of songs that didn't make the final cut - but they did! The Everly Brothers are among the true greats of music and richly deserve their place as icons of rock, country and roots music. Perhaps from lesser talents I might have viewed this album as being ok but the Everlys can do much, much better (and have done).Read full review
