Reviews"...The little jam band that could injects some muscle into its noodling..." - Rating: B+, "...Matthews handles the lithe melodies with such ease that the music flows like conversation, drawing the listener in as if he or she were a participant, making the album almost addictive...", "...One of the most ambitious releases of '94. With an arsenal that includes reeds and a violin backing Matthews' gorgeous vocals, they've got chops to kill....Almost unclassifiable, they sound like four or five groups in one...", 3 Stars - Good - "...There are hints of the itchy shuffles of The Spin Doctors, the bucolic textures of Southern groups of yore but in-between come the flashes of anguish that go down well on the college circuit. Repeated exposure sees the preciousness recede and its artful tunefulness come to the fore..."
Additional InformationDMB's major-label debut was their breakthrough thanks to the singles "What Would You Say" and "Ants Marching."
Best DMB album to date. Complex and melodic fusing rock, jazz, folk and - almost at times - singer-songwriter overtones (evident particularly on the acoustic bonus tracks), which offers on repeated listens. Later albums, in my opinion, become more indulgent and formulaic (stadium rock) but here in the early days the band were new, innovative and crisp with plenty of interesting musicality
Had seen the band on a video and liked what I saw, but unfortunately the album wasn't to my taste, however it served a cheap purpose of saving me £40 on the vinyl version.
