About this product

Product Information

Frenhofer (Michel Piccoli), a renowned French artist, hasn't lifted his brush in years. But when he meets the stunningly beautiful girlfriend (Emmanuelle Beart) of a young painter visiting his chateau, she inspires him to return to work on an abandoned masterpiece, known as "La Belle Noiseuse." Frenhofer had set the painting aside a decade earlier when it threatened to consume him entirely and destroy his fragile relationship with his wife. Stirred to action once more, he and the young model embark on a perilous collaboration that will forever change them both. New Wave legend Jacques Rivette's beautiful, passionate film honestly depicts the painful choices an artist must sometimes make between commitment to life and loved ones, or total submission to the often devastating demands of art.

  • Mesmerising

I love this film. It's slow but full of underlying tension. Emmanuelle Beart as Marianne is utterly mesmerising. The sets are evocative of the mystery that lies beneath the search of the artist for a truth that he senses lies deep within the model's soul if only he can capture it through an image of her body. Michel Piccoli as the artist Frenhofer captures his anguish subtly throughout. The ending may appear confusing but it speaks volumes. Nearly four captivating hours. I could not tear myself away from this film and could watch it over and over again. In the end it's a story of unrequited love that affects every character in that story. Afterwards, I felt that I had missed something. Something that perhaps we nearly all do.

  • An interesting film about making art.

Considered a modern classic this film is still good after all these years. Especially the scenes which show the art being created in real time are magical.
