  • Alan Bates is brilliant in The Shout

Only Alan Bates could play this part and make it believable. The glint in his eye says it all! This is a film fit to be cult viewing. A young John Hurt typified the era as an actor who wasn't afraid to be portrayed as wimpish and clumsy. No ego trips here as there are now - just pure acting! On the surface this is a film about control, dominance, sex and mental illness, but there's so much more if you choose to look deeper.

  • An interesting tale

Good quality production, widescreen, good picture quality. A typically 70s tale of the supernatural, but beautifully done in places. Some very atmospheric pieces where the plot is in no hurry to push forward but simply rest for a while with some lovely camera shots creating contrasts and insights. Alan Bates is great as the mysterious , crazed stranger that bring destruction to the lives of a bored couple. Susannah York , the wife, as lovely as ever. John Hurt the husband who seems to have brought this misfortune upon himself through an infidelity of his own. The plot here is inconsequential, the true gem of this movie is its gentle pace, the time it takes to paint a picture, to cast a character, to set a scene. It creates impressions that stays with you.
