This movie is most informative as an insight to a member of the Royal Family who was not very well known. A very good production of a series I believe that was done for TV, in two parts. Queen Mary and George V youngest son John, suffered an afflication which we know as epilepsy. It was not well known back in Victorian times. John was kept separated from the rest of the family and was looked after by his Nanny ( Gina McKee)who gives a wonderful empathic performance. John's closest brother was George who understood him. The doctor's thought that John was also retarded, and feared that anyone knowing this would see the Royal Family in a somewhat negative light. Seeing that Queen Mary and George V were NOT exactly known for their heart warming paternal/maternal nature ( far too imperious ) Is it any the wonder that the royal family had problems? This movie does do justice to a little known subject and I would recommend it to anyone. The Germanic and Russian genetics come into play and it is quite easy to see how George V reinvented his family name to Windsor. Only just touched on, one can also realise why from this generation onwards the royal family were told to go out and marry commoners. With the Germanic side of psychological problems were becoming common from inter-marriage between the main European dynasties and the threat of Haemophilia from the Russian side. From an historical standpoint the movie tries to look at the Royal Family life prior to WWI and the ensuing events that led to that conflict. Some very fine performances from the cast. The interaction between the two actors who play Prince John and Prince George are to be commended.Read full review
