A marvellous British comedy classic featuring stars who knew that their trade depended upon the importance of characterisation and situation. If the 1950s seem to have been a golden age of British humour, then this film exemplifies this zeitgeist. Yes, there are unlikelihoods and unexplained sources in the plot but the film cruises along quite nicely on its own momentum, never failing to lose the viewer's attention. Terry-Thomas is in his element as the archetypal upper-class cad, and, as might be expected, Peter Sellers seizes every opportunity to don a sequence of colourful disguises. He creates a dozen different faces with a dozen different voices. I especially liked the scene in the Dublin pub, where Sellers makes a fool of himself by playing a stage caricature of an Irishman and tries to speak Gaelic by reciting the very long name of that railway station in Wales. Llan.... gogogoch or whatever. Dennis Price is in his element as the suave blackmailer and publisher of the eponymous scandal magazine 'The Naked Truth'. His mantra to its featured personae is:- 'Pay up in a fortnight or I'll publish in a month!' Peggy Mount, Joan Sims and Shirley Eaton also give sterling performances as blackmail victims determined to eliminate this gutterpress menace once and for all. This film inspires not only nostalgia for the past but nostalgia for quality entertainment per se.Read full review
