When I first saw how the lighting was done I thought yes! this looks familiar! pure Godfather! With F.F. Coppola as director and Mario Puzo involved,it didn't take a huge leap of faith to think we were going to have a story and a half here! Well we didn't, The story ducks and weaves trying hard to cover the 'panorama of love, crime and entertainment'without really concentrating on either to any extent. It goes from love angst,to gang killing,to tap dancing routine. Your left feeling either your watching two movies or it needed some filling. Some of the acting is also nothing short of bizarre! Particularly from a young Nicolas cage, a nephew of the director. He bounces round the set and doesn't really seem to know what his character is. To a degree you can't blame him. In one hand he's this hyperactive half wit and yet as the movie progresses he seems to be working his way up in gangster land, leading a gang, and looking for a share of the extorted pie. So not the best choice in career but no idiot none the less. James Remar as Dutch Schulz is completely off putting. He is so over played he wouldn't look out of place in Panto! Coppola's casting of his daughter Sophia in Godfather three is only his second, and maybe even third worst casting now in my book! The main character Dixie Dwyer (Gere) is well enough played but he comes in and out of the story and you can't help thinking there's something better happening werever he is when he's not on screen. There are a couple of relationship sub-plots that I found it hard to care about because they weren't that likeable. Generally I think this movie was probably a bit of indulgance for Coppola and has been edited mercilessly to bring it down to just over two hours leading you to feel you've been told only slices of a story. That said I've no great hunger to see what ended up on the cutting room floor!Read full review
