I had seen this film some years ago, and loved it then. It was on TV again recently, and I had a conversation with a work colleague about 'feel good' movies, and I was emphatic in saying I do not like Hollywood 'pink & fluffy' happy endings, where everyone is cute and pretty, and lives in a nice apartment - the same reason I dislike Richard Curtis comedies. Anyway, I really like this film - Born Romantic. As I say who isn't? Born Romantic, that is. We see characters in this film whose belief in romance is skewed, lost and abandoned. Yet, accidental meetings, and faith bring the couples to each other and to decide whether to embark again on love, and afresh with romantic hopes. I also love the little details you get in a good UK comedy: the two cabbies debating relations between the sexes, the subsiding house, where without comment made a cup will slide off the table whilst an argument plays out. The charaacters are REAL, flawed and human, and you feel for them all, and laugh with them on their journey. Also, Paddy Considine has never to my knowledge, appeared in a bad movie (let me know if I'm wrong there), and his small part in this film is just great. This quirky little british comedy has a great cast that really involves you in the lives of 3 couples trying to get together through the link of a Salsa club. The film manages to avoid any Hollywood glitz and relies on great portrayals of the almost dysfunctional characters. A film you can watch more than once, but falls just short of being a classic.
This is a great romantic film. Shown from the point of views from different people, but they are all connected somehow to the one salsa club. Sit down relax with a glass of wine and enjoy this easy going feel good film.
If you love Salsa, you'll love this film. Great cast. Edgy, unconventional and quirky. Great music too. I saw it on BBC iplayer and immediately tracked both the film and the sound track down. Makes me want to take up Salsa!!
