Additional InformationCharlie Chaplin has a dual role in this film, his first with dialogue. He plays a sweet-natured Jewish barber and a murderous Hitler-type dictator with such satirical impact that it counterbalanced the oratory of Adolf Hitler. Particularly delectable comic scenes are Hynkel's balletic "pas de deux" with a globe, and a cream cake fight between Hynkel and Napoloni, the dictator of Bacteria.

This must have been ground breaking when the film was made and no doubt contributed to Hoover’s declaration that Chaplin was a Communist. It is as much an illumination of the political extremism of the USA at this time as it was of Chaplin. It is still powerful. This masterful restoration of a great film enables it to live again.

I'd seen the speech from the end of this film on YouTube and found it riveting and completely liberating but then found it was from this film. Ordered the DVD and just watched it, I could say afterwards was wow. The underlying story is just as relevant today as it was back in the day this was made. Charlie Chaplin, for a man made famous through mime and music was a true genius. The extra disk with interviews and footage from the making of the film was just as good though most people will disregard the second disk as unworthy but I insist, it's really worth watching. Good audio and visual quality, really glad this gem has been retained for generations to come.
