This is almost scary in it's aggressive honesty. Any one who's been through a divorce will feel stabbed by lines from it. Elvis Costello has defied the limitations of genre all the way through his rather odd career. There's no concealment of writing honours here and it is challenging to sit, listen and decide who wrote what bit, what tune. It is not easy to get it right - the Brodskys are as capable of writing as is Costello. In the notes, EC points out that, in the classical world, song-cyles for voice and String Quartet are extremely uncommon - I can't think of any nor have reviewers elsewhere mentioned any. Is it a recent form of Classical music and if so, do we actually owe it to George Martin & the Beatles' "She's Leaving Home" and "Eleanor Rigby"? I'vr read reviews in 'another place' where some of these pieces have been called 'weak' but I find no holes after listening for (wow!) 13 years. I settle down for an hour's listening and 15 minutes later it's finished. Any CD that can destroy subjective time like that is something to cherishRead full review
A great album from the man with the most interesting career in the last 30 years. His immersion in different genres ensures that his albums are always worth a listen.
