... so irresistible you'll have to watch it at least twice.
This story of an ambitious aardvark who drums on trees to shake out the ants is well thought-out and lovingly executed in meticulously performed stop motion. Barry Purves, the brain behind this short film was also the producer of the award-winning Wallace and Gromit animation "The Wrong Trousers", and "Hamilton Mattress" is right up there alongside its more famous sibling. The extras on the DVD are well worth a watch, since the team shows us exactly how painstaking they have to be to achieve the fluidity and credibility that they get. The sets are as beautiful as those for any full-scale live action film, but more so for being in miniature. And the music ... say no more! All in all, it may only be a short piece, but it will more than repay your time. In fact, I daresay you'll find it so irresistible you'll have to watch it at least twice. My suggestion is (1) watch the main movie; (2) watch the "making of" piece, (3) watch a few other bits, (4) come back to the main movie and watch it all again, this time looking and listening out for those little "insider secrets" that bring you a huge smile when you're the only one who's in on it.
