Track listing The King of Rock 'n' Roll Cars and Girls I Remember That Enchanted Nightingales Hey Manhattan! Knock on Wood Golden Calf Nancy (Let Your Hair Down for Me) Venus of the Soup Kitchen.
Prefab Sprout's 1980's classic album 'From Langley Park To Memphis' is filled with an array of dynamic and versatile song tracks all sung by gentle sounding (mostly) Paddy McAloon. His perfectly pronounced well toned vocal melodies capture the imagination which is backed up by clever music, jangly rhythms, jumping catchy bass lines, even the noise of a cow is somewhere in the mix. This is not however in the song 'Golden Calf' which rocks no doubt, but instead baffles curiously in the fine melodic, heartfelt and touching 'Venus of The Soup Kitchen'. Prefab's most famous track 'The King Of Rock and Roll' is great to start with but it doesn't stand out as the best song of the 10. To me all 10 are fantastic winning numbers. At first listen song number 5, 'Nightingales' struck me as the potential 'weakest link' on the disc but after hearing it 3-4 times it's soft fairy like twanging delicacy reached my heart the same as the other tracks already had so that was a bonus. If anything now it's one of my favourites of the 10 gems of musical splendour. I would recommend this album highly as one of the greatest and most innovative 80's LPs that was produced around the period. At £2.49 with free postage (the price I paid) for me it's proved the bargain of the year!!
