I saw an interview with Michael Anderson (the director) and he told some of the back story and although I had see the film over 50 years ago decided to take another look. Although a little dated it shows good solid British Cinema and I really enjoyed it. Although the name of the main characters dog which I will not repeat is not pc-it was made in a different time. One if the interesting facts that Michael Anderson said- the actors who portrayed the real life heroes looked very much like them and to go to such detail is commendable. On the whole a good film to watch on a rainy afternoon not only on Sunday as this is a good one.

An utterly fascinating (and quite true) depiction of WW2 brains and bravery -- each equally heroic. This is an exquisite suspense drama that pivots on technology. It unfolds gradually and grippingly, so that we develop an appreciation of, not only the ingenuity, but the trial and error, that accompanies any important scientific breakthrough. And then, there are the characters: Richard Todd, (an actual WW2 paratrooper war hero) as the flight commander, and Michael Redgrave, as the inventor, are excellent, as they orchestrate together the bouncing-bomb attacks on Germany’s “great dams.” The tragedies of the war are potent, but so is the humanity. Although I often loathe war films, this one is understated and intelligent, which elevates it above the lunkheaded shortcomings typical of the genre. The Star Wars battle sequences are notorious rip-offs of scenes from this film.Read full review
