Hello pop picker. This is the story of Belle & Sebastian, a wonderfully fey indie collective from Glasgow. And, this, their second album, is surely one of the greatest albums ever made. Their style is unique. The music itself is folky, low-fi, out of tune in a tuneful way. It is uplifting and melancholic, often at the same time. The lyrics; self-deprecating, amusing, honest, raw; on a par with greats such as the Smiths and Pavement. It works on so many different levels. The tunes are catchy in a Top-40 kind of way, yet exquisitely dorky. A bit like Ant and Dec, you don't want to like them but you do. Then you listen more carefully and the lyrics really pull you in. "...You liberated , A boy I never rated, And now he's throwing discus, For Liverpool and Widnes..." is a classic from the excellent "Stars of Track and Field". Pure genius. And the thing about Belle and Sebastian is that once you like one song, you have to listen to it again and again. And then another song on the album kind of catches your attention, slowly pulling you in and finally becoming your favourite. This album really is a grower. The urgency of the harmonica in "Me and the Major", the crescendo of "Judy and her dream of Horses", the lyrical pain of "Seeing other people" all blossom on further listening. I would highly recommend this album and, in fact, any Belle and Sebastian record.Read full review
