Reviews5 stars out of 5 - "...A wonderfully emotional and honest record, filled with thrillingly evocative songs which finds her staking out some new, undefined space between contemporary folk, alt. country and alternative rock...", 4 stars out of 5 - "...A powerful new record that continues her previous record, WRECKING BALL's heavy/ethereal vibe....this is contemporary country of a kind never envisaged by Nashville...", "...Spectacular...leading one to wonder why she doesn't write more often - the dozen songs are like a book of short stories...", 4 out of 5 - "...Her anguished soprano is in fine form, and WRECKING BALL's sonic fabric still prevails: acoustic instrumentation with rock and ambient shards and shadings.", "...An album to shatter your heart and lift your soul....Her greatest strength here remains her voice...", "...It builds its sound from some solid sources....largely midtempo, familiar pop....There are songs that tell stories that jump out at you, and lyrics with traction...", Included in Q's "50 Best Albums of 2000"., "...Full of love in all its aching permutations...GIRL shimmers with poetic imagery and soul." - Rating: A
You have to be a serious fan of Emmylou Harris to fully appreciate this album. I am a serious fan. It's a concept album, with most of the tracks written by her, following on from "Wrecking Ball" (1995?). She's not a songwriter by nature, yet when she puts her mind to it, the results are truly terrific. This album needs to listened to a number of times to even begin to appreciate it. Her musicians are excellent and the album has a haunting, nostalgic quality to it, full of both joy and sadness.
Red Dirt Girl is a departure from straight Country. Heartfelt and crafted. Atmosphere in bucketloads. Love her and her ambition. Fantastic achievement.
