  • Great album.

10 cc are such an innovative band. They sound like no one else and are completely original. They prove this on Sheet Music, only their second album. The sheer variety of styles is amazing. It all kicks off with a standard rocker in Wall Street Shuffle, a scathing critique on the whole financial system with all its greed and avarice. Wordplay, as elsewhere, plays a major role in the clever lyrics: 'Oh, Howard Hughes, did your money make you better?' Self-parody follows in the second track: The Worst Band in the World, a weird (in a good way) stop-start melody with, again, tongue-in-cheek lyrics about roadies and vans. 'Hotel', the third track, is a samba-ish romp satirising American island colonialism, but gently and humorously. The pace changes drastically with the beautiful ballad 'Old Wild Men': yes, even rock stars get old one day. Clockwork Creep is a frantic, humorous song sung from the point of view of a proud aeroplane with a bomb on it. I'm aware of how weird that must sound in the light of the very real problem of international terrorism. But 10 c.c. have this wonderful art of being able to make a joke out of anything without somehow being offensive. 'Silly Love' is a straightforwardish rocker, and the heaviest track on the album. Full of throwaway lyrics and bad puns ('cliches and toupes and threepes'), it's fun, and screams 'enjoy us, and don't take us too seriously'. Somewhere in Hollywood is beautiful, complex, again with clever wordplay, and not so much satirical as a paean to that superb film industry. Baron Samedi is a fast rocker, possibly the weakest on the album, but is a stonker in its own right, which goes to show how brilliant the whole album is. The Sacro-Iliac is a gentle, acoustic guitar driven, short song, a little pastiche on the world of dance(s), and the album finishes with a (that word again) humorous take on the whole Middle Eastern rich oil sheik scene with all its shady deals and gun running, Oh Effendi. This album iis fun and serious. Its pace is fast and slow. No two tracks sound the same. It's a breath of fresh air and hugely enjoyable. Buy it.
