This album sounds more user friendly, less electronic than those 'experimentation era' recordings of the ninties. Definitely it's an album that a non-U2-fan would appreciate, packed with tracks that you like at first listening. No surprise, the first two tracks got into the 'Best of 1990-2000' compilation. The album is dominated by the well-distinguished U2 lyrical sound, best example is 'Beautiful day'. Besides this overarching mood the tracks do differ and entertain all along the album. Most rocking track is 'Elevation' that gives evidence that U2 can still produce danceable 'kind-of-hit' tunes. The submarine sonar-like effects makes this track even cooler. Even for this three tracks it would be worthy to get this CD. There is a stylish booklet inlcuded with black-and-white photos taken at an airport. It contains lyrics and also the human right protests of the band.Read full review
If you could only have two U2 cd's... and I have every one of them. This would be tops along with Joshua Tree.
Bought this CD on Ebay as it is so much easier than traipsing round the shops. Had to replace an old copy lost in moving too much.
The tradition is that fans of any band like the old stuff, while acknowledging new material. I have been a U2 fan since I was a very young man - have seen them live many times, and (of course) love the old stuff. 'All that you can't leave behind' - released in 2000 - is thus new stuff. But really, it is really great 'new stuff'. Most readers will be familiar from radio-play favourite 'Beautiful Day'. This is a great song, and a candidate for U2's best song (and certainly the most succesful in financial terms - it has received royalties from repeated TV airplay, clips and samples). Other crackers are track 3 (Elevation - a live favourite) and track 4 (Walk On - a tribute by Bono to his late father Bob Hewson). The truth is that this is a great U2 album, that old fans and new fans alike will love. The concurrent live show (from 2000-2001) 'Go Home' available on DVD live from Slane Castle also makes for great entertainment. Really the coming of age for U2. Buy it and love it - highly recommended.Read full review
This album is fairly good but come on people it isn't a Joshua Tree or An Achtung Baby or even Unforgettable Fire or Under a Blood Red Sky . some good lyrics and some fine melodies that stick in your head but it's quite mellow for me . I preferred the energetic side of U2 . This album is perhaps a step up from pop , tho some would disagree , but i wouldn't place it above zooropa . U2's best days are definitely behind them but it's still good to see a real rock band producing some quality music . Stick to this trend for the next album please lads .
