  • More of the same. Not necessarily a bad thing...

Almost everyone considering buying this album will already have bought at least one of the series. They'll have studied the track list and decided if they want this episode and acted upon that decision without ever coming here to read a review. So I'm assuming that you, dear reader, are a first timer who has never bought a copy of the Golden Age of American Rock'n'Roll before. This is one of a series of albums issued by Ace Records UK featuring the music of the rock'n'roll era before the British Invasion. It's not a 'Best of', more a 'best and the rest of'. You'll probably have heard most of the best anyway because record labels taking advantage of the UK's copyright laws (Basically anything from 1962 back to the dawn of time is free to use) have overstuffed the marketplace with various 'The absolutely very best of...' packages. The beauty of this series is that amongst 'the rest' you get the occasional absolute classic that should have been a giant hit, but wasn't, partly due to the fact that some records just never got the coverage they deserved, but also possibly because no one else agrees with you. So be prepared to listen to several records in which you don't agree with someone else. If you're seeking new-old rock'n'roll this series delivers, there's nothing here that doesn't deserve the exposure, the only question is how much of it grabs you right there and how much is just tiding you over till the next track. And were you to pose that as a question I'm afraid it goes on the list of questions that no one can answer. All I can say is that you have nothing to lose except for the price of the CD + shipping, and you might just be about to enter a new world of rock'n'roll, just like it used to be.
