This is a truly beautiful and quite moving album. Gemma Hayes has an honest voice with a sensual vulnerability and softness whose Tipperary lilts can send you soaring but her raw edginess can also kick ass. There is a strong U.S. influence (it was recorded in Buffalo, N.Y.) and her accent is definitely more Sheryl Crow than The Coors. She seems underrated and has not enjoyed the mainstream or even indie success (Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine is a close aly) that she appears to deserve which is a shame. Having listened to Hanging Around and Back of my Hand (with a fab video) on You Tube and loved them but feeling less inspired by some of her other songs on there, I decided to purchase this cd (very cheaply). I had low expectations but was pleasantly surprised to find an album of instantly likeable songs with a range of personalities, harmonies and tempos. There are some simple yet emotionally evocative lyrics showing glimpses of lovelorn scars. The letter to the reader in the middle of the cover insert is enough to make you weep (yes, I admit to welling up!). If you appreciate heartfelt ballads with a few great guitar riffs thrown in for good measure then I doubt you'll be disappointed with this album.Read full review
This is an excellent CD. I had a pirate copy (tut tut) but decided that it was so good I had to buy the original. Gemma Hayes is an Irish singer songwriter and this CD is a mixture of folk and more up-tempo tunes. Really worth a listen.
