Theoretically a John Otway "Greatest Hits" CD should only have 2 tracks - possibly 3 if you count "B" sides of hit singles. So the fact that this CD has over a dozen is perhaps testament to the fact that Mr. O doesn't necessarily see the world quite the way others do. And thank goodness for that. Every track is an adventure and none more so than the masterpiece that is "Beware of the flowers (because I'm sure they're gonna get you, yeah)". It took a while to grow on me. I first heard it on a flatmate's badly scratched 7" vinyl disc in 1985 and 22 years later rushed to buy the digitised version on eBay. I have already started saving for John Otway - Greatest Hits Vol.2. Can't wait.........but may well have to.
Having been a fan of this guy since the release of Really Free during the Punk revelation in 1977 and that most memorable energetic appearance with Wild Willy Barret on BBC2's Old Grey Whistle Test, this CD is a valuable and treasured addition to my collection. It clearly displays and defines the versatilty of John's musical talent ably assisted by WWB (mainly on the earlier stuff). Every one of John's own tracks tells a story with a message and the covers, especially the live ones, are just brilliant. Rock on Johnny O.
