I am a big White Stripes fan and after purchasing Elephant I decided to search the back catalogues for more of this genius blues rock madness. I found this self titled debut in the sales and had to have it. Since that day this album has remained my favourite of all the White Stripes work. The pure simplicity of Jack and Meg's guitar and drums combo on this record give a raw and honest feel to their songs. Every song on the album immediately gets you tapping your fingers or toes to its thumping drums and guitar hooks. Jack White is the greatest guitar player of our current plethora of bands and this album really shows the raw materials that set him apart from the rest of the pack and why he will remembered as THE greatest artist of his time. This album will inspire a whole new breed of young guitarists and bands for many a year to come. Stand out tracks for me are "When I Hear My Name", "Astro" and "Stop Breaking Down". Though there were 17, yes 17, of these brilliant songs to pick from, and nearly all of them will end up making your top 25 Stripes tracks! A Must for all Stripes fans!Read full review
Great new blues. For my money The White Stripes are the best band to emerge from Detroit in over 20 years, and Jack White the saviour of the guitar. A raw - stripped back sound, held together with the primitive percussion of Meg White. don't pay any attention to Meg White's detractors - she is an essential element of the White Stripes sound, and one of the reasons they are such a breath of fresh air. This album was released before their massively successful 'Elephant' album, and contains some songs which may not be quite as accessible - but they repay the listener with an album of songs with a greater longevity than those of later albums.
How can 2x instruments make such a large sound? The White Stripes seemed to have picked up from where Marc Bolan got star eyed and lost his way. Jack White plunders blues roots & garage punk to spurt out zippy little raucaus rock n roll numbers like chuck berry on nitro. If attitude ranks as high as ability in your taste, you need to have this album.
Great thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
