A run in the early 60s of instrumentals hits ("Hideaway" etc), followed by an attempt in the late 60s to kickstart his career at Atlantic (on Cotillion label) with the help of King Curtis and Donny Hathaway helping produce and arrange had not worked out. As a result, Freddie moved to the new Shelter label just established by Leon Russell.
Russell with his mainly Tulsa-origin musicians supporting treated King as a star and recorded 3 LPs with him ("Gettin' Ready"; "Woman across the River" & "Texas Cannonball"). The best of those 3 albums is on this CD and if you want to understand why Freddie became so popular in the early 70s before his tragic early death, this is the place to start.
Great value compilation and well mastered!
