3 out of 5 - "...experimental.... MAGICAL SOUNDS' standout tracks...shift from slow-moving trance to seductive grooves flavored with African chants and Eastern melodies...", "...Magical indeed...marries the robotic hue of techno to the throbbing bass of dub with the organic, luminous vibes of Middle Eastern melodies, vocals and percussion of produce an album that transcends the boundaries of genres and culture..."
This album was released in conjunction with the Lonely Planet travel guide series, and the title made me think initially that it was a compilation of previously-released tracks. At first glance, the cover looks like something from the Woolworths bargain bin, until you realise that there's a "2001" style obelisk in the water - don't be fooled by the feet clad in flippers!
The tempo of the album is a little more upbeat than the ambient feel of the "Big Men Cry" album (one of Banco's best) but fits nicely with that and "Maya" and "Last Train..". I haven't been so impressed with 00s releases such as "Igezeh" and "You are Here" (great tracks in places but too many fillers) but I'd rank "Magical Sounds" as one of Banco's must-have's.
Banco De Gaia has released maybe a dozen albums over the years since the early 90s when he started recording. Inevitably styles change over time as new influences enter people lives and they become interested in new ideas. I have only been interested in Banco De Gaia for a few years, starting with some of the earlier albums namely Maia and Big Men Cry. I feel those early albums are more spiritual, and more thought provoking. It sounds bad, but originally I was a little put off by the cover of this album, no more pyramids and buddist statues, giving the album a bit more of a main stream, Ibiz feel. The music is however not. This album marks a transition period for Banco. It is not as different as the We Are Here which actually features lyrics, shock horror! But is progressing towards that direction. If you prefer the old style, then Touching The Void and Glove Puppet are heavenly. The rest of the album took me a little while to get into, and although not my fave Banco album, I do like and find it quite inspiring. Nice one Toby.
