The Sound System was an important part of early Jamaican music where groups of DJs would come together to play new tunes that people might not otherwise get to hear and this compilation attempts to bring together some of the songs that defined those far off days. Much of what is featured here demonstrates the style at the time when American rhythm and blues was popular and the songs were frequently covered by the Jamaican artists who would add their own rocksteady, ska or reggae tinge to the proceedings. As such many of the songs sound almost quaint in their dated style but are still very enjoyable and there are few who could deny the talents of the likes of Ken Boothe (better known for "Everything I Own") or Leroy Smart. Perhaps a few of these songs lean too heavily on the American style and could have done with being a bit more indigenous but this is a minor criticism. However this is more than just a collection of US covers as the album becomes more diverse in its latter half. Gregory Isaacs' roots reggae demonstrates that the awakening of political consciousness need not mean the end of good music, whilst aficionados of the Rasta sound will be glad to hear Barry Brown featured as well. Owen Gray's "Natty Bongo" is a slightly bonkers song to get the feet tapping to, although for me the highlight has got to be "Mule Train" by the absolutely barking Count Prince Miller. With a guttural roar to make your average death metal singer sound like Britney Spears the ebullient Miller presents a tour-de-force with his rather bizarre cover of this old cowboy song. Indeed if anybody on here deserves a wider audience it is the criminally ignored Miller, who is only really remembered in this country for his turn in the much-missed "Desmond's". With some quite soulful songs showing the early developments of Jamaican music before it gained a worldwide following "Sound System Rockers" is an interesting collection that throws up more than a few forgotten gems. Definitely worth hearing.Read full review
